Present Perfect Continuous Tense

What is the Present Perfect Continuous?

We use the present perfect continuous to talk about:

The Long Day at the Library (with highlighted tense)

have been sitting at the same wooden table in the school library for hours, watching the sunlight slowly move across the floor. My notebook is open, my pen is in my hand, but my mind has not been resting at all. I have been preparing for my final English exam, and it feels like my whole life has been revolving around grammar rules, vocabulary lists, and practice tests.

Since early this morning, I have been reading one chapter after another. My eyes are tired, but I cannot stop yet. My teacher has been reminding us that this exam is very important, and her voice keeps echoing in my head. She has been teaching at our school for more than ten years, and she always knows how to make students both nervous and motivated at the same time.

Around me, other students have been working quietly. Some of them have been whispering to each other, sharing notes and tips. Others have been staring at their books like statues. My best friend, Ali, has been sitting across from me since nine o’clock. He has been drinking too much coffee, and his hands have been shaking slightly every time he turns a page.

“We have been studying all day,” he suddenly says, rubbing his eyes. “Do you think it is enough?”

“I hope so,” I reply. “I have been trying to remember all the tenses, especially the present perfect continuous.”

Outside the window, the sky has been changing colors slowly. The afternoon has been turning into evening, but none of us has been paying much attention to time. The librarian has been walking around quietly, making sure everyone stays silent. She has been working here for years, and she seems to know every book on every shelf.

My phone vibrates in my pocket. My mother has been sending messages every few hours to ask if I am eating well and taking breaks. I smile but do not answer immediately. I have been telling myself that I will reply after finishing just one more exercise.

As the clock shows seven, my head feels heavy. I realize that I have been studying for almost ten hours without a real rest. My back hurts, and my fingers are stiff from holding the pen. Still, I feel a strange sense of pride. I have been working hard, and that matters.

Ali closes his book slowly. “We have been doing our best,” he says. “Now it’s time to go home.”

I pack my bag and stand up. The library feels different now—quieter, darker, calmer. As we walk toward the door, I take one last look at the table where I have been spending my entire day.

Tomorrow, when I sit in the exam room, I will remember this long day. I will remember how I have been trying, how I have been learning, and how I have been growing, one sentence at a time.
